Arthur James Cross was the son of Arthur John Cross and Sarah Ann Stapleton, who married at Nottingham in 1889. They had five children who were; Arthur James (b.1890), Edward Frederick (b.1892), Lily (b.1896), Ellen Ann (b.1898/d.1903), Percy Harold (b.1902). All except Lily were born in the Nottingham registration district. The family homes identified were: 24 Miall Street, Radford [C.1901] and 14 Middleton Street, Radford [C.1911]. Arthur John Cross, who worked as a fitter, died at Nottingham, aged 69, in 1938. His widow died at Nottingham, aged 78, in 1948.
Spr. Cross volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 01/06/1915. He was involved in the fighting during the Battle of Loos and was killed in action. His body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
In memoriam published 17th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CROSS. – In loving memory of our dear son, Sapper Arthur James Cross, Royal Engineers, killed by a German sniper at Loos, October 18th, 1915, aged 24 years. Far and oft our thoughts do wander, to that grave so far away, where they laid the best of sons and brothers just a year ago to-day.
