John Henry Betts was born in Nottingham in 1891, the oldest child of John Henry and Kate Betts. His father was born in 1865 at Clay Cross, Derbyshire, and worked as a coal miner. He married Kate in 1893, and died in 1920. The other children in the family were; Florence May, born in 1895, Clara Ann, born in 1897, Lucy, born in 1900, Wallace, born in 1905, Harold, born in 1906, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann, born in 1907, Thomas, born in 1910 and Kate, born in 1911. The family lived at 7 Dovedale Terrace, Radford, 11 Plimsoll Terrace, Hyson Green and finally 14 Gate Street, Radford Woodhouse, Nottingham.
Betts was called up for service and enlisted at Pontefract, Yorkshire. The 56th Battery was part of the 34th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, and they served in the Third Battle of Ypres, where artillery casualties were exceptionally high. He was killed in action on 13/08/1917 and was buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery.
