Family History

Ernest Knowles was born in 1892 he was the son of Henry (Harry) a mechanic and Fanny Knowles née Pass and the brother of Joseph, John, Charles and Grace Knowles. In 1901 they lived at 49 Lower Dale Road Derby Harry was born in 1856 at Lenton, Fanny (Frances) Pass was born in 1855 at Radford , they were married in 1874 at Nottingham and had 6 children. In 1911 the family were living at 9 Regent Street, Long Eaton, Harry is 55 yrs and a mechanic, he is living with his wife Fanny 56 yrs and two of their children, Charlie 17 yrs a labourer and Grace 14 yrs. In 1911 Ernest has left the family home, he has joined the Army and is living in barracks at South Tedworth, Hampshire, he is 19 yrs of age and serving with the 10th Hussars.

Military History

Private Ernest Knowles enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 6282 in the 10th Hussars. He was killed in action on 11th October 1916 whilst serving with the 8th Squadron machine gun corps. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.

Extra Information

His brother Sergeant 4901 Joseph Knowles served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was Killed in Action 16th September 1916, aged 36, by German shelling of the front line trenches near Guillemont. France, during the Battle of the Somme.
