Family History

William Hammond Hinde was born in in 1876 he was baptised on 2nd January 1877 at St Peters, Warsop, he was the son of the late James a labourer and Elizabeth Hinde née Thompson Hammond, of Warsop. His father James was born in 1853 at Warsop he died in 1890 aged 37 yrs Elizabeth Thompson Hammond was also born in 1853 at Warsop she died in 1919 aged 66 yrs, they were married in 1871 at Nottinghamshire and went on to have 7 children. William Hammond Hinde married Norah Riordan (born 21st September 1878) in 1902 at St Georges Church, Hanover Square, London, they lived at 1w Peabody Buildings, Guest Street, London. In 1911 William was living at Moor Lane Chambers, Moor Lane, London, he is 35 years and is a time keeper at a cap and hat manufacturer, he is living with his wife Norah 32 yrs, Commencing 6th March 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Sergeant William Hammond Hinde, enlisted at Belfast whilst residing in London, he initially served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards later transferring to the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915 at Sulva Bay,Gallipoli. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 9 September 1915. 'Hinde. killed in action Sgt William Hammond Hinde, Royal Irish Rifles, late 2nd Grenadier Guards, son of Elizabeth and the late James Hinde, 23 Baldwin Street, aged 39 years.' In memoriam published 9th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HINDE. – In ever-loving memory of Sergt. William Hammond Hinde, 6th Royal Irish Rifles (late 2nd Grenadier Guards), killed in action, Suvla Bay, August 9th, 1915.
