Robert (Bob) Stewart was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of Mrs Annie Stewart, of 31 Cooper Street, Nottingham (CWGC). In the 1911 census he and his mother are living at 7 Guys Terrace, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham. Head of the household is Edward Morley 40 yrs single and an auctioneer's porter. Annie Stewart is shown as 34 yrs, married, born 1877 in Nottingham, and is a housekeeper. Also living at the address are Robert M Stewart son 14 yrs b1897 Nottingham an errand boy, and daughter Ivy M Stewart 2 yrs. Annie states she has been married for 14 yrs and has had 3 children, 1 of whom has died. It is noted that on the headstone in the Nottingham General Cemetery, below the name of Robert Stewart, is listed Edward Morley who died 10th Sept 1923 (64 yrs) and Annie M Stewart who died 30th November 1950 (74 yrs).
Private Robert (Bob) Stewart, 4th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died on 28th January 1918 in the War Hospital, Sunderland, from septic poisoning of the lip. His body was returned to his family and he was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
Inscription on gravestone, Nottingham General Cemetery: ‘In loving memory of Pte Robert (Bob) Stewart who died Jan 28th 1918 aged 21 years. Dearly loved by all. Also of Edward Morley who died Sept 10th 1935 aged 64 years. Also Annie M Stewart, who died Nov. 30th 1950, aged 74 years.’ Death notice published 1st February 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STEWART. – On the 28th inst., Pte. Robert (Bob) Stewart, died in hospital from septic poisoning of the lip, very suddenly. One day I shall understand.
