Leonard Jones was born in 1892 the son of Henry a cycle hand and Eliza Jones (née Beckson). Henry was born in 1869 at Nottingham, Eliza Beckson in 1873 also at Nottingham. They were married in 1891 at Nottingham and had a further son Arthur born 1899. In 1911, the family was living at 1 Michael’s Place, Kyte Street , New Lenton. Leonard married Nellie Maud Costello (born 7th April 1891 ) in 1915 at Nottingham and they lived at 27 Welbeck Street, Nottingham. Commencing 18th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Lance Corporal Leonard Jones enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He landed in France on 31st December 1915. He was killed in action on 23rd August 1917 and is buried at Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, (4 km east of Bethune) Grave Reference: IV E 11 His Military Medal award was published in the London Gazette on ' 19th February 1917.'
In memoriam published 23rd August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- 'JONES. – In loving memory of Lance-Cpl. Leonard Jones. Killed in action August 23rd, 1917, aged 25 years, Military Medal. If I could have raised his dying head and heard his last farewell, the parting would not have been half so hard for those who loved him best. Dearly loved and sadly missed. – Loving wife Nellie.' 'JONES. – In loving memory of Lance-Corpl. Leonard Jones, killed in action August 23rd, 1917, beloved son-in-law of Mrs. Costello, Welbeck-street. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. – Loving mother, sisters, brothers-in-law, Edith, Florrie, Mabel, Albert, and Neil, Arthur (in France).' 'JONES. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. Leonard Jones, killed in action August 23rd, 1917, beloved son of Mr. Jones, of Lenton, Never will his memory fade.
