Cornelius Hallam was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred Hallam and the brother of Alfred Hallam jnr. In 1911 they lived at 89 Manvers Street Nottingham, Cornelius is shown as being 26 yrs of age, married and a publican, his father Alfred is shown as being 56 yrs and is separated . Cornelius married Gertrude Ward (born 19th February 1884) in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they lived at 4 Mapperley Yard, Woolpack Lane, Nottingham, they had a son Alfred born 25th April 1907. In 1911 Gertrude Hallam is living at 199 Windmill Lane, Nottingham, she is living with her widowed mother Harriett Ward 64 yrs a lace hand, Gertrude is shown as being 27 yrs and is a blouse hand, also living at the address is her son Alfred 4 yrs of age. Commencing 10th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Cornelius Hallam enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 31st May 1917 and is buried at Chocques Military Cemetery
There were two men named Cornelius Hallam, of similar ages, living in close proximity in Nottingham before the Great War. Hallam the publican can be identified as the St Mary's fatality because the other Cornelius Hallam's service record has survived. He had served pre-war with KRRC before being discharged unfit. He rejoined in 1917 and served with RAMC and apparently survived the war.
