Military History

Pte. Truman was in all likelihood a reservist, following army service. He therefore arrived in France on 24/09/1914. He was killed in action at Ennetieres on 20/10/1914 when the battalion held the village. Both flanks were turned by the Germans, thus forming a sharp salient. They were refused permission to withdraw and suffered there after constant artillery and sniping fire. They were subjected to periodic attacks which caused huge casualties, and in the end 484 men were captured, part of 710 casualties. Pte. Truman's body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
