Family History

Joseph Francis Thompson was born in 1886 in Nottingham and worked as a lace curtain warehouseman. He married Charlotte Gertrude Thompson, who was born in 1886 in Nottingham. They had two daughters; Elsie Elizabeth, born in 1910 in Nottingham and Gladys Clare, born in February 1911 also in Nottingham. The family lived at 28 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.

Military History

Cpl. Thompson volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France on 28/02/1915. On 25/06/1916 250 men from the battalion were positioned in No Man's Land opposite the village of Gommecourt, digging a new trench in preparation for the attack on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. It was about 140 yards in advance of the front line and once the Germans saw what was happening they shelled the men heavily and there were many casualties including Cpl. Thompson.
