Family History

Harry Shelton was born in 1880 in Nottingham, working as a bricklayer's labourer. His wife Clara Shelton, nee Metcalf, who was illiterate, was born in Nottingham in 1880, working as a lace clipper. They were married on 11/03/1905 in Nottingham and had two children, Selina Margaret, born 19.04.1905 in Nottingham and Lily, born March 1911 in Nottingham, but who died 10/12/1915 from pneumonia. The family lived at 6 Westminster Terrace, Nottingham before moving to 16 Hartwell Street, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham.

Military History

Cpl. Shelton volunteered for service on 28/08/1914. He was appointed lance corporal on 29/01/1915 and corporal on 18/04/1915. On 29/03/1915 he was admitted to 18th Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to the right ling. He was sent down the line to 3rd General Hospital at Le Treport and then on the hospital ship "St. Andrew" to England. He returned to France on 09/07/1915 but was killed in action on 09/08/1915 in heavy fighting around the village of Hooge. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
