Father:Chalres Shaw, born in 1867 at Belton, Lincolnshire and working as a farm labourer. Mother: Emma Shaw, born in 1866 at Granby. Brothers: Amos, born in 1896 and Sydney, born in 1900. Sister: Clara, born in 1898. All the children were born in Granby. The family moved from Granby to 1 Foundry Yard, Leenside, Nottingham. By 1911 Charles Henry had left home and was boarding at 17, Derby Grove, Nottingham.
Pte. Shaw enlisted at Shirebrook, Derbyshire and after training he was drafted to France. The battalion was caught up in the fighting on the first day of the German spring offensive, Operation Michael on 21/03/1918. The position was hit by a heavy artillery barrage and gas shells were dropped to the rear. Large infantry formations attacked and there was hand-to-hand fighting. By 10.00 a.m. the Germans had broken through on each flank and soon after they cut off the battalion's rear. The last message arrived at noon and soon after the battalion ceased to exist. Pte. Shaw was killed in action. Hos body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Arras memorial.
