Father: William Redford, born in 1871 at Banbury, Oxfordshire and working as a builder's labourer. Mother: Anne Redford, born in 1872 in Banbury. Brothers:Ernest, born in 1894 in Walws and working as a colliery loader, George, born in 1897 in Nottingham, Harry, born in 1906 in Nottingham, William, born in 1909 in Nottingham and Harold, born in 1914 in Nottingham. Sisters:Florence, born in 1899 in Nottingham, Edith, born in 1903 in Nottingham and Alice, born in 1908 in Nottingham. The family lived at 33 Martin's Yard, lensed, Nottingham before moving to 17 Knotted Alley, Canal Street, Leenside, Nottingham.
Pte. Redford volunteered for service and attested on 16/07/1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to 17th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters the same day with No. 28094. Following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 06/03/1916. On 06/08/1916 he was admitted to 133rd Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to his left elbow. He was sent on to 33rd Casualty Clearing Station and then to 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Boulogne. On 08/08/1916 he was sent back to England on the hospital ship "Cambria." On recovery he was transferred to the 8th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment and returned to France. On 01/01/1918 he was taken to hospital at Le Report with a gunshot wound to the thigh and one to the left forearm. He was again sent back to England and on to the Lord Derby War Hospital at Warrington, where he was admitted on 17/01/1918 and remained until 05/06/1918. He was returned to France, embarking at Folkestone on 03/09/1918 and arriving at Calais the same day. He was killed in action during the final Allied advance and was buried in a small quiet cemetery; Wargnies le Grand Churchyard.
