Francis McDermott was the son of Patrick and Alice McDermott and they lived at 9 Brougham Street, Sneinton Nottingham.
McDermott was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion took part in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres, when McDermott was killed in action. His body was not recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial At Ypres.
In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 9th April 19120 :- “MCDERMOTT. – In loving memory of Pte. Francis McDermott, aged 18, killed in action April 9th, 1917, at Hill 60, Ypres. Upright and just in all his ways, honest and faithful to the end of his days; forgotten to the world by some he may be, but dear to our memory he will ever be. – From mother, sisters, and brothers.” Above is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918.
