Father: Arthur Miller, born in 1854 in Nottingham, working as a boot repair. Mother: Eleanor Miller, born in 1865 in Nottingham, and working as a lace mender. She was married to Arthur Miller in October 1888, following the death of her first husband. Brothers: Albert Maples, born in 1888, working as a wood sawyer and later as a labourer and Arthur Miller, born in 1891. Sisters: Florence Maples, born in 1887, working as a lace finisher, Emmerline Maples, born in 1889 and Lily Miller, born in 1899. All the children were born in Nottingham. William Maples was born in 1890 The family lived at 32 Thoresby Street, Nottingham, before moving to 73 Canal Street, Nottingham.
Maples volunteered for service and following training was drafted to France, arriving on 09/09/1915. The battalion was involved in the Battle of Arras, and Maples was killed in action on 16/06/1917, though he was at first posted as presumed dead. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 March 1918: 'Maples. Wounded and missing June 16th 1917 now reported killed, Private W Maples, Northumberland Fusiliers, youngest son of Mrs Miller, late of Thoresby Street. Mother, sisters, brothers.'
