Father: Henry Chilton,born 1852 at Hanley, Staffs. Mother: Lucy Sarah Chilton, born 1853 at Edinburgh. He had four brothers; David, born 1878 at Hanley, Nehemiah, born 1880 at Derby, Henry, born 1881 also at Derby and Thomas, born 1885 at Stoke on Trent. He also had five sisters; May E., born in 1876 at Hanley, Agnes, born in 1883, Alice, born 1888, Dora, born 1891 and Edith, born 1892. All the girls apart from Mary were born in Stoke on Trent. Thomas Chilton married Mary Ann Barton in October 1915 at Stoke on Trent. However, they later moved to 9 Selina Terrace, Rupert Street, Nottingham, though how much time Lance Corporal Chilton spent there is unclear. After his death she remarried and became Mrs. Griffiths, but at the same address.
Chilton volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France. In 1916 the battalion was based near Bailleul, where it improved the trench system and aimed to keep the German troops from moving south to take part in the Battle of the Somme. On 28/06/1916 Chilton was seriously wounded and died the same day. He was buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord.
