He was the son of Abraham and Emma Bayliss of Nottingham. He was the husband of Hilda Eliza (née Bellaby) Bayliss. They married in 1914 and lived at 5 Norwell Terrace, Ryeland Crescent Meadows, Nottingham.
The battalion was heavily engaged in fighting during the Battle of Lys in April 1918 as the Germans launched their second offensive, Operation Georgette. The Guards attempted to push back German forces but sustained heavy casualties near Vierhouck. Worse still there developed a huge gap to their right which the Germans began to get through, threatening their rear. Only with difficulty did they manage to extricate themselves, but in the day's fighting Pte Bayliss was wounded and died later of his injuries. He was buried at Aire Communal Cemetery. 2.B.19
