Richard Homer Dean (junior) was born in 1883 in Liscard, Cheshire and was the son of the late Richard Homer Dean (senior) a commercial traveller and Clara Dean.His father Richard Homer (snr) was born in 1855 in Wallasey, Cheshire and his mother was born in 1857 in Liverpool. They were married in 1880 in Birkenhead and went on to have 2 sons, Percy Wheatley Dean b 1881 Seacombe, Cheshire and, Richard Homer (junr) b1883. His father died 30th June 1910 in Kendal he was 55 yrs old. In the 1911 census his mother is living at 22 Percival Road, Nottingham and she is shown as Clara Dean , head, widow 54 yrs she is living with her son William Homer Dean 28 yrs a builders clerk. His probate was proven on 20th April 1917 in Nottingham, it shows him as William Homer Dean 21 Walter Street, Nottingham Second Lieutenant in HM Army died on or since 11th October 1915 in Belgium or France, his effects of £1098 19shillings and 3 pence were left to Percy Wheatley Dean a builders manager.
Commissioned on 21st August 1915, Second Lieutenant William Homer Dean, served with 1/7th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 28th February 1915, he was killed in action on 11th October 1915. [1] Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.[1] All official sources give this as his date of death, though the battalion was in rest billets at the time. He almost certainly met his death during the attack on Hohenzollern Redoubt on 13th/14th October 1915. He is listed as “missing” in the battalion war diary entry on 15th October 1915.
Article published on 6th July 1915 in Nottingham Daily Express :- On 6th July 1915 the then L/Sgt. Willam Homer Dean, was included in the list of men reported to have been wounded.“Lance-Sergeant W. H. Dean, who prior to the war, resided at 21, Walter-street, is well known in local amateur theatrical circles, being a member of the Nottingham Amateur Dramatic Society, in whose productions he has been on several occasions appeared. He served through the Boer War with the Cheshires, coming through without being wounded.” Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 21 October 1915.
