William Ambrose was born in 1885 in Wilcote Warwickshire and was the son of Ambrose a labourer and Mary Winders nee Richardson of 99, Bateman Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1862 in Chelvey, Berkshire and his mother Mary Ann Richardson was born in 1860 in Yarley Warwickshire, they were married on 17th August 1884 in Holy Trinity Church, Marylebone Road, Westminster, they had 5 children , William Ambrose b1885, George Ernest b1896 Nottm, Kathleen b1898 Nottm Ada Rose b1900 Nottm and Grace b1903 Nottm. He married of Sarah Ann Morrison (born 24th May 1887) in 1906 in Nottingham , they went on to the following children, Ernest Ambrose born 8th September 1907 Harry born 14th December 1909 Mabel born 8th May 1912 and William born 13th December 1913. They lived at 12 Moffat Street, Southampton Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. In the 1911 census he and his family are living at 19 Pleasant Row, Nottingham , he is 26 yrs of age and a collier. In the same census his parents are living at 2 Adams Cottages, Lindsey Street, Nottingham and are shown as Ambrose Winders 49 yrs a labourer he is living with his wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and their children , George Ernest 15 yrs, Kathleen 13 yrs , Ada Rose, 11 yrs and Grace 8 yrs. His address listed with his photo in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 28th April 1916 shows his address as 12 Moffat Street, Nottingham

Military History

Private William Winders enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Forests Regiment. He landed in France on 14th July 1915. He was reported missing on 14 February 1916 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
