Family History

Albert Wakefield was born in 1892 at Nottingham and was the son of the late James a sawyer and his second wife Emma Wakefield née Dykes of 46 Edwin Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1848 in Nottingham, he died in 1905 aged 57 yrs, he married his first wife Betsy Gould (born 1848) on 3rd October 1869 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they had the following children, James b1871, William b1873, Harriett b1874 his first wife died in 1880 at Nottingham aged 32 yrs. His father married his second wife Emma Dykes b1848 (born 1848) in 1881 at Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Richard b1885, Joseph b1886, Betsy b1888, Harry b1890, Albert b1892 and Ernest born 1894 all were born in Nottingham. His mother Emma died in 1916 at Nottingham she was 68 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 46 Edwin Street, Nottingham and are shown as Emma Wakefield 62 yrs a widow and lace hand, she is living with her sons Albert 19 yrs a labourer and Ernest 17 yrs a painter, also at the address are 2 boarders.

Military History

Private Albert Wakefield enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, he landed in France on 30th August 1915. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 2C, Somme, France.

Extra Information

His brother Lance Corporal Ernest Wakefield enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 23rd September 1916 at 34th casualty clearing station and is buried at Grove Town Cemetery Meaulte, Grave Reference: I H 29
