Frederick was born in 1888 the son of George William a lace curtain maker and Fanny Elizabeth Tombs née Hayes. His father was born in 1865 in Lenton and his mother Fanny Elizabeth Hayes was born in 1867 in Sneinton (both Nottingham). They were married in 1886 in Nottingham and had eleven children. Frederick’ s siblings surviving infancy were Ethel b.1891, John b.1893, George b.1898, Fanny b.1899, Florence b.1901, Arthur b.1903, Eva b.1907 and Agnes b.1909. All the children were born in Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 80 Flewitt Street Nottingham. Fred in 1911 was serving in India with the Sherwood Foresters.
Frederick Tombs enlisted in Nottingham and was a professional pre-war soldier. He was serving with 'A' Company 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment when taken prisoner on 20th October 1914. He was killed by lightning on 28th February 1918 whilst still a prisoner of war and buried in Cologne South Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post 28th February 1919 :- “TOMBS. – In loving memory of Pte. Frederick Tombs, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, the beloved son of Fanny and George Tombs, 48 Flewitt-street, prisoner of war 1914-1918, accidentally killed 28th February 1918.
