James Henry Slater

James Henry was the son of James and Susannah Slater. His father married twice. His first wife, Carolina Ann D'Ascanio, was born in 1849 (birth registered J/A/S Lambeth London), the daughter of Domenico and Ann D'Ascanio who later lived in Newark. She and James were married in 1868 (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham) and they had two daughters, Carolina Ann (b. 1869 O/N/D Radford) and Elizabeth. Carolina died aged 23 in 1872 (death registered J/A/S Radford). James married Annie Longland the following year in 1873 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham) and they had at least seven children: Arthur James Longland (b. 1874 O/N/D Radford), James Henry (b. 1876 A/M/J Radford), Francis [Frank] William (b. 1877 J/A/S Radford), Mary Susan (birth registered 1880 J/F/M Nottingham), Charles Leonard (b. 1883 J/A/S Nottingham), Thomas Herbert (b. 1886 J/A/S Basford) and Minnie (birth registered 1888 J/F/M Nottingham). In 1881 James and Susannah were living at 6 Storer Terrace, Sneinton. James was a baker. In the household on the night of the census were James (38), Susannah (34), James' daughters by his first marriage, Caroline (11) and Elizabeth (9) and his four children by Susannah; Arthur (6), James (4), Francis (3) and Mary (1). Three children were born after the 1881 Census, Charles Leonard, Thomas and Minnie. The family has not yet been traced on the 1901 Census apart from Caroline (21) who may also have been a general domestic servant in the household of Maria Fisher and her two daughters in the ecclesiastical parish of Nottingham All Saints, and Elizabeth (19) who may have been a general domestic servant in the household of Henry and Lucy Gillespie at 55 Cranmer Street, Nottingham. James Slater senior probably died at the age of 49 (b. abt 1843), death registered 1892 J/F/M Nottingham. In 1901 the widowed Susannah (53) was living at 32 Livingstone Street, St Ann's, with her stepdaughter Lizzie [Elizabeth] (29) and Arthur (26) a baker and confectioner, Mary (21) a shirt machinist, Charles (17) a draper's assistant, Thomas (14) a warehouse boy, and Minnie (13) an errand girl. Also in the household was Susannah's sister, Lucy A Longland (51) who worked in the hosiery trade. James Henry, a baker's journeyman, was a boarder at 8 Oakley's Road, Long Eaton, Derbyshire, in the household of Hannah Lowe (32) a widow with four children between the ages of one and eight. There was also a second boarder in the household, Roland Davis (21) a pork butcher's assistant. Francis William was married by 1898 but he has not yet been traced on the 1901 Census. Susannah Slater (b. abt 1845) died in 1903 (death registered A//M/J Nottingham) and the family was dispersed. Francis William had married Edith Blanche Cordon in 1898 (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham) and in 1911 Francis (33) and his wife Edith (35) were living at 251 St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. Francis was a joiner and undertaker on his own account. He and Edith had three children, Harry (11), Frank (10), and Eleanor (5). Also living with them was Francis's younger brother, Thomas Herbert (24), a sewing machine mechanic Arthur James Longland married in 1904 and died in 1959; he was buried on 24 February. Charles Leonard married Ethel Chambers in 1906 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham) and in 1911 they were living on Thorneywood Lane. Charles (27) a draper's assistant, and Ethel (28) had two sons, Charles Leonard (4) and Stanley (3). Mary Susan was also probably married in 1906, to Thomas Eastwood (marriage registered O/N/D Portsmouth). Thomas was born in York on 11 October 1877 and was an engine fitter and turner before joining the Royal Navy on 27 August 1903 on a 12 year engagement. In 1911 he and Mary were living at 8 Harrow Road, Southsea, Hampshire, with their daughter, Nellie (3). Thomas completed his engagement with the Royal Navy on 11 March 1915 (HMS Erin) when he would have been 37 years old; there is no evidence that he re-engaged for the remainder of the war. The youngest child, Minnie, probably married Allan Perkins in 1908 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham). In 1911 Allan (25), a clerk in the lace trade, and Minnie (23) were living at 22 Pullman Road, Nottingham. Minnie died on 1 April 1959; she and Allan, a retired despatch clerk, were living at 26 Hillside Avenue, Mapperley, Nottingham, at the time of her death. James Henry married Annie Prince in 1909 (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham) and in 1911 they were living at 18 Northville street, Nottingham. James (34) was a baker. He and Annie (26 b. Shirland Derbyshire) had one son, Arthur James (9m. birth registered 1910 J/A/S Nottingham). They later had at least one more child; Elizabeth E. born 1911 (birth registered O/N/D Nottingham). At the time of James' death in 1919 the family was living at 26 Sketchley Street, Nottingham.
