John Charles Slack was born in 1887 in Beeston and was the son of Joseph a domestic gardener and Sarah Edna Slack née Pickersgill of Hurst Cottage, Derby Road, Lenton. His father Joseph was born in 1858 at Ockbrook, Derbyshire and his mother Sarah Edna Pickersgill was also born in 1858 in Leeds, Yorkshire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration District. They went on to have 4 children, John Charles b1887 Beeston, Emily Annie b1889 Beeston, Arthur b1891 Bramcote and Joseph Hamlet b1895 Bramcote. In the 1911 census the family are living at Hurst Cottage, Derby Road, ;Lenton and are shown as Joseph 53 yrs a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Edna 53 yrs and their children, John Charles 23 yrs a domestic gardener and Joseph Hamlet 16 yrs a dental mechanic. John Charles married his wife Helen Louisa Astill in 1916 in Nottingham they lived at 4, Denstone Rd., Carlton Rd., Nottingham.
Private John Charles Slack, enlisted at Beeston whilst residing at Lenton and served with the 16th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles), he was killed in action on 22nd September 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
Death notices published 13th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SLACK. – Killed in action, about Sept. 20th to 22nd, Pte. Charles Slack, Sherwood Foresters, aged 30. – From his sorrowing wife. “SLACK. – Killed in action on or about Sept. 20th, Pte. Charles Slack, dearly-beloved eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
