Harold Pownall was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of George a general labourer and Emily Pownall née Cooke of 68 Flewitt Street, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1871 and mother Emily was born in 1870 both born in Nottingham, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Emily b1891, William b1896, Harold b1898, Ernest b1905, Phyllis b1909 and John Leonard Pownall b1910 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 Rancliffe Terrace Pym Street, Nottingham and were shown as George 40 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Emily 41 yrs and their children, Emily 20 yrs a cotton winder, William 15 yrs a cooper worker, Harold 13 yrs a scholar, Ernest, 6 yrs, Phyllis 2 yrs and John Leonard 6 months old.

Military History

Private Harold Pownall enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he died of wounds on 4th July 1917 at no 7 casualty clearing station, France and is buried in Noeux Les Mines Communal Cemetery Grave Reference: II D 29
