Leonard Charles Oswell was born in 1899 at Nottingham and was the youngest son of Charles Melton a gas department collector and Emily Maude Oswell née Newell of 11 Dowson Street, Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham His father Charles Melton Oswell was born in 1860 at King's Lynn, Norfolk his mother Emily Maude Newell was born in 1858 at Nottingham, they were married in 1885 at Nottingham and had the following children, Bertram Newell b1886, Ernest Edward b1887, Hilda Maud b1892, Doris Emily b1892, and Leonard Charles b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Dowson Street, Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham and are shown as Charles Melton Oswell 51 yrs a collector for the gas department, he is living with his wife Emily Maude 49 yrs and their children, Bertram Newell 25 yrs a clerk at gas depot, Ernest Edward 24 yrs an assistant in electrical department, Hilda Maud 19 yrs a telephone operator for the post office, Doris Emily 15 yrs a scholar and Leonard Charles 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Leonard Charles Oswell enlisted at Grove Park Kent, he initially served with the service number 203971 in the Army Service Corps. He was serving with the 12th battalion East Surrey Regiment when he was reported missing in action on 4 September 1918, later confirmed dead in September 1919. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Somme, France.
