William was the son of William Frank and Charlotte Newell nee Spick. William Frank and Charlotte were married in 1874 (J/A/S Nottingham) and had seven children of whom only five were still living at the time of the 1911 Census. Six children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: Mary birth registered 1876 (J/F/M) d. 1907, Frank b. 1877, Henry b. 1879, Ellen (Nellie) birth registered 1883 (J/F/M), William birth registered 1885 (J/F/M) and Kate (Kittie) birth registered 1888 (J/F/M). In 1881 William, a lace warehouseman, and Charlotte were living at 69 Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham, with their three children Mary (5), Frank (3) and Henry (1). William and Charlotte had moved to 65 Blue Bell Hill by 1891 where they lived with their six children Mary a shop assistant, Frank, Henry, Ellen (8), William (6) and Kate (3). Also in the household was Charlotte's widowed father, Robert Spick, a lace maker. The family was at 2a Stanley Street, St Ann's in 1901. William was now an agent for a textile manufacturer. Their six children were still living at home: Marya cashier, Frank a warehouseman (clothing), Henry a warehouseman (lace), Ellen a cashier), William a clerk in a lace warehouse and Kate who was still at school. Frank married Bertha Matthews in 1904 and Mary married Alfred Kirby Ball the same year. Mary died three years later on 1 October 1907 at the age of 31; Alfred later remarried and died in 1922. By 1911 William, now a button merchant (employer), and Charlotte were living at 68 Blue Bell Hill Road with three of their children, Ellena clothier's cashier, William an electrical engineer's clerk and Kate a clothier's cashier. In 1914 William's business was based at 34 High Pavement, Nottingham. Frank, a wholesale clothing manufacturer, his wife Bertha and their only child, William Frank (b. 1906) were living at 214 Blue Bell Hill Road in 1911. In 1914 Frank's business, Newell, Lomas & Co., was based at Taylor's Factory, Sherwood Street South, while his home address was The Promenade, Robin Hood Street. Henry has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. Both William's parents died in 1934; Charlotte on 3 May and William on 15 November. They both died at 53 Cavendish Road, Sherwood - the home of one of their daughters - but had previously lived at 6 Sandringham Road, West Bridgford.
9th Bn Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). William was killed in action on 7 August 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Inscription on family gravestone, Nottingham General Cemetery: ‘In loving memory of Mary, the beloved wife of Alfred Kirby Ball, and eldest daughter of William Frank & Charlotte Newell, who departed this life October 1st 1907, aged 31 years. ‘Absent from the body, Present with the Lord.’ Also William Newell, youngest son of the above, who was killed in action in France August 4th 1916, aged 31 years. ‘This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song.’ Also Alfred Kirby, the beloved husband of Gertrude Ball, who died August 21st 1922, aged 45 years.
