Ernest Keward was born in 1884 in Nottingham and was the son of John a bobbin and carriage hand and Elizabeth Keward née Hames His father John was born in 1853 in Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Hames was born in 1854 in Nottingham, they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Radford Registration district, they went on to have 7 children sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Ernest b1884, John Hames b1886 , Frank b1886 and Lily b1890 Ernest married his wife Miriam Elston in 1905 in Nottingham they lived at 41 Caroline Street Peas Hill Road Nottingham, he was and the father of Herbert Keward born 12th January 1912. In 1911 census Ernest and his family were living at 17 Blake Street Nottingham and were shown as Ernest 27 yrs a bobbin and carriage hand, he is living with his wife Miriam 24 yrs and their son Herbert 2 yrs, also living with them is his mother Elizabeth Keward 57 yrs. Following his death his widow Miriam was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 10th September 1917 at this time she was living at 99 Pym Street, Gordon Road, St Ann's, Nottingham
Private Ernest Keward, enlisted at Nottingham on 27th October 1914 he gave his age as 30 yrs and 10 months and his address as 99 Pym Street, Nottingham, his next of kin was his wife Miriam of the same address, his occupation was that of a barman. He was embodied on the same date and posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, however some 9 days later he was discharged from the Army under Kings Regulation 392 his discharge date was 4th November 1914. He later rejoined the Army and served 16th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles), he was killed in action on 30th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
