Family History

Richard Greatorex was born in 1893 at Derby and was the son of Joshua a house painter and Maria Greatorex. His father Joshua was born in 1849 at Wirksworth he died in 1918, his mother Maria Wilson was born in 1850 in Derby she died in 1899, they were married in 1870 in Duffield, Derbyshire they went on to have 10 children. Richard Greatorex lived with his common law wife Martha Craven at 9 Leicester Street at Derby and had a son with her Richard Greatorex Craven born 7th August 1916 (died 1918) His army service record contains his army form W5080,(next of kin form) it was submitted by Martha Craven who gave her name as Martha Greatorex, upon which she states she was the intended wife of Richard Greatorex, living at 9 Leicester Street, Derby, she states he had a son Richard Greatorex Craven born 7th August 1916, she further states his parents were both deceased and he had one brother Daniel Greatorex she signed the form Martha Greatorex.

Military History

Private Richard Greatorex enlisted on 13th May 1915 at Derby, he gave his address as 179 Stockbrook Street, Derby his age was 21 yrs and 7 months, he was a labourer. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 13th March 1916. He was wounded, a gun shot wound to his abdomen on 5th July 1916 and was returned to England on 7th July 1916, he was admitted to the 2nd Western Hospital at Manchester on 8th July 1916 and died of his wounds on 22nd October 1917. He was buried at Manchester Southern Cemetery.

The connection between this man and the parish of St Bartholomews, Nottingham has not yet been established, is a possible identification.
