David Grain

Born in 1879, David was the son of Elijah and Emma Grain. He had at least eight siblings according to the census returns 1881-1901: Elizabeth, Charles, Elijah, Mary, Ernest, Henry, Dorothy and Emily Isobel. In 1881 his parents were living at 54 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton; they had three children, Elizabeth (4), David (2) and Charles (2). Ten years later they were still living in Sneinton but were now at 6 Seymour Street. Five more children had been born to them: Elijah (8), Mary (6), Ernest (4), Henry (2) and Dorothy A. (1 month). By 1901 the family was at 153 Pym Street, St Ann's. Elijah was listed on the census as married but his wife was not in the house on the night of the census nor was his son Charles. However his other children, who included another daughter, Emily Isobel (8), were at home. By the time of the next census in 1911 Elijah was a widower; he was still living at Pym Street together with three unmarried children, Elizabeth (34), Ernest (25) and Emily (18). David had left home having married Martha Alice (22) c1910; they were living at 9 St Albans Street, Nottingham, with their daughter, Edna, who had been born on 3 December 1910. When David's death was confirmed in September 1917 his wife and child were living at 66 Flewitt Street, Nottingham, but it is not known whether they moved house before or after his death. David's father, Elijah, died in 1921, aged about 73. David's widow probably remarried as there is a record of a Martha A Grain marrying John R Kitchen in 1923 (registered Jan/Feb/Mar). Her second husband died in 1933 aged 56 while Martha died two years later on 5 October 1935 at the age of 47. Edna Grain probably died in Nottingham in September 1995 at the age of 84; she appears not to have married.
