William Burnett was born in 1895 at Nottingham and was the son of Thomas a letter press printer and Mary Burnett née Wragg of 60 Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1854 in Manchester and his mother Mary Wragg was born in 1852 at Nottingham, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Annie b1885, Ada b1887, Alfred b1888, Alice b1890, Arthur b1892, and William b1895 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Massey Street, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas Burnett 57 yrs a letter press printer, he is living with his wife Mary 59 yrs and their children, Annie 26 yrs a lace pattern girl, Ada 24 yrs a lace jennier, Alfred 22 yrs a draughtman for a curtain manufacturer, Alice 21 yrs a pattern girl, Arthur 19 yrs a tailors salesman and William 16 yrs a printer.
Private William Bennett enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1st July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
His brother Lance Corporal Alfred William Burnett enlisted on 22nd February 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 26 years and 4 months and his address as 21 Massey Street, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham, his next of kin was his mother Mary of the same address, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and promoted to Lance Corporal on 11th September 1915. He embarked from Folkstone on 11th July 1916 disembarking the same day at Boulogne and arrived at Etaples base camp on 13th July 1916. He was killed in action on 1st July 1917 and is buried at Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France. Plot 3, Row F. Grave 20.
