Family History

Thomas Bird was born in 1891 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Joseph a plumber and Hannah Bird née Mayer of 14 Lytton Street, Gordon Road, Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1854 at Loughborough and died on 5 November 1908 aged 54 and his mother Hannah Mayer was born in 1854 at Barrow upon Soar, she died on 26 July 1941 aged 87. They were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district, they went on to have the following children, Joseph b1878, Mary Jane b1881, John Richard b1882, Emma b1885 and Thomas b1891 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 122 Gordon Road, Nottingham and are shown as Hannah 57 yrs a widow and shop keeper, she is living with her children, Joseph 32 yrs single a compositer, Thomas 20 yrs a pawn brokers assistant, also living at the address is her married daughter Emma Harrison 25 yrs an overlooker and her husband Bernard Westmorland Harrison 25 yrs a stock keeper

Military History

Gunner Thomas Bird enlisted at Nottingham and served with C battery, 76th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 5th May 1917 and is buried in Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. IV.D.1)

Inscriptions on the kerbstones of the family grave, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Joseph Bird died Nov. 5th 1908 age 54 years. Hannah Bird beloved wife of Joseph Bird who died July 26th 1941 aged 87 years. Thomas Bird, killed in action May 6th 1917, aged 26 years. Mary Jane Truman died Nov. 5th 1929 aged 49 years.'
