Family History

Joseph Bickley was born in 1883 in Nottingham and was the son of Joseph a lace maker and Eliza Bickley nee Orrill, of 158 Hewitt Street, Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1858 in Nottingham and his mother Eliza/Elizabeth Orrill was also born in 1858 in Nottingham, they were married in 1880 in Nottingham and went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 of whom were to died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Nottingham were :- Rose Bickley Orrill b1879, Elizabeth b1882, Joseph b1883, Ethel b1889, Albert b1891, John b1894, Nellie b1896 and Beatrice b1900. In the 1911 census the family are living at 231 Castle Boulevard Nottingham and are shown as Joseph 53 yrs a lace maker he is living with his wife Eliza 53 a hosiery hand and his children , Ethel 22 yrs a lace hand, Albert 20 yrs a bicycle hand, John 17 yrs a packer case maker, Nellie 15 yrs a lace hand and Beatrice 11 yrs , also living with them is Herbert Bickley Smith 4 yrs a grandson. Joseph Bickley married his wife Emily Stevenson (born 24th March 1883) on 29th November 1902 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they lived at 15 Owen Street, Nottingham, they had the following children, Joseph born 7th January 1903, Frederick born 28th November 1904, Mary born 23rd January 1907, Rose born 31st August 1908, Florence born 3rd June 1910, Noel born 25th December 1911, Beatrice born 13th June 1913, and Harry born 22nd February 1915, Harry died on 1st March 1917 he was 2 yrs of age. In the 1911 census Joseph and his family are living at 281 Windmill Lane, Nottingham and are shown as Joseph 28 yrs a brick maker in brickyard, he is living wit his wife Emily 27 yrs amd their children, Joseph 8 yrs, Fred 6 yrs, Lizzie 4 yrs, Rose 2 yrs and Florrie 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Joseph Bickley enlisted on 5th December 1914 in Nottingham, he gave his age as 31 yrs and 11 months and he stated he was a brickmaker. he was living at 281 Windmill Lane, Nottingham, he was posted tot he 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 14th July 1915 and was killed in action on 7th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Following his death his widow living at 15 Owen Street, Nottingham was awarded a pension of 30 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 5th March 1917.
