Family History

Walter Baines was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of William a maltsters labourer and Ada Emma Baines née Poyser of 26 St Christopher Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1876 in Donnington, Lincolnshire and his mother Ada Emma Poyser was born in 1876 in Carlton, Nottingham, they were married in 1898 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, John William b1899, Walter b1899, Maggie b1901, Maud b1903, Lois b1904, Joseph Arthur b1906, Stanley James b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 St Christopher Street, Sneinton and are shown as William 35 yrs a maltsters labourer , he is living with his wife Ada Emma 35 yrs and their children, John William 12 yrs , Walter, 11 yrs, Maggie 10 yrs, Maud 8 yrs, Lois 7 yrs, Joseph Arthur 5 yrs and Stanley James 2 yrs , all the children are at school. His father William died on 12st December 1916.

Military History

Private Walter Baines, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he died of wounds on 26th November 1918 at Rouen and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension.

In memoriam published 26th November 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BAINES. - In loving memory of my dear son, Walter, died of wounds, Rouen, November 26th, 1918; also my dear husband, December 12th, 1916; and baby Stanley, died November 21st, 1911.
