Leslie Wightman was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of George Albert a telephone linesman and Annie Wightman née Whiting, of 113, Northumberland St, Nottingham. His father George Albert was born in 1863 in Nottingham and his mother Annie Whiting was born in 1861 in Nottingham, they were married in 1894 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children , sadly 1 of whom died in infancy their surviving two other children both born in Nottingham were, Alice b1895 and Leslie b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at 113 Northumberland Street, Nottingham and are shown as George Albert 48 yrs a telephone linesman, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs and their children Alice 16 yrs a lace joiner, Stanley 13 yrs a scholar and Leslie 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Leslie Wightman, served with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 23rd October 1918. He is buried in Capelle-Beaudignies Road Cemetery.
His brother Pte. Stanley Wightman, 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 8th November 1918. He is buried in Dourlers Communal Cemetery Extension, where he is commemorated by a special memorial. In memoriam published 23rd October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WIGHTMAN. – In loving memory of our dear sons, Private Leslie Wightman, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action October 23rd, 1918; also his dear brother, Private Stanley Wightman, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action November 8th, 1918. Loving in life, in death they were not divided. – From their sorrowing mother, father, and sister. “WIGHTMAN. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear chum, Leslie Wightman, killed in action October 23rd, 1918.
