Thomas was born about 1876 the son of William and mary Underwood. He had at least six siblings; William, Harry, Frederick, Arthur, John and Lina. In 1881 the family lived in St Ann's and in 1891 were still living in St Ann's at 20 Rushworth Terrace. There were seven children at home the night of the census; William (17), Thomas (15), Harry (13), Frederick (11), Arthur (9), John (7) and Lina (2). Thomas married Ada Tomlinson in 1900 (marriage registered Apr/May/Jun) and by the time of the census the following year were living at 64 Caroline Street, St Ann's. In 1911 Thomas and Ada were living at 7 Carnarvon Street, St Ann's, and had two children, Dorothy (8) and Reginald (1). According to a notice of Thomas' death in the local paper, all his brothers also served in the war.
The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) posted to 1st/22nd Bn. London Regiment. He is buried in Laventie Military Cemetery, La Gorgue (grave ref. I.C.13).

Killed in action October 16th (sic), Private Tom Underwood, for 22 years secretary and worker of Children's Evening Service (?Crocus Street Hall).' Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 4 November 1918: 'Underwood. Killed in action October (-) Private Tomm Underwood, husband of Ada Underwood, 7 Carnarvon Street. Wife, children, father, sister, sisters-in-law, 6 brothers serving with the Colours.' His widow, Ada, was his sole legatee.
