Edgar Gale Julian known as Gale was born in 1897 baptised on 10th August 1899 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of Walter a foreman bricklayer and Annie Nowell née Wilford of the Estate Office Radcliffe on Trent Nottinghamshire. Walter and Annie Wilford were both born in 1864 at Radcliffe on Trent, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had 10 children. In 1911 the family are living at Estate Cottages , Radcliffe on Trent, Walter 47 yrs is a foreman bricklayer he is living with his wife Annie 47 yrs and their 10 children.He was the son of Walter and Annie Nowell of the Estate Office Radcliffe on Trent Nottinghamshire. He was the brother of George Andrew Henderson Nowell (killed in action 7/7/1916)
Private Edgar Gale Julian Nowell attested on 20th January 1916 at Nottingham, he was 19 yrs of age and an assistant baker., he was posted to the Army Reserve. On 5th April 1916 he was mobilised and posted Army Service Corps and on 11th April 1916 posted to 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 16th July 1916 . On 3rd September he was posted to the 17th Battalion. On 28th June 1917 he was killed in action and is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military cemetery ID 23.
His brother Sgt. George Andrew Henderson Nowell, 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 7th July 1916. He is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz. In memoriam published 28th June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NOWELL. – In loving memory of our dear sons & brothers, Private G. Nowell, S.F., killed in action June 28th, 1917, also Sergt. H. Nowell S.F., missing July 7th, 1916, of Radcliffe-on-Trent.
