Samuel Swift was born on 8th March 1887 at Nottingham and was the son of Samuel Swift, a tailor, and Eliza Swift (née Blatherwick). His father Samuel was born in 1857 in Nottingham and his mother Eliza Ann Blatherwick was born in 1863 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1884 inNottingham, and had a second child, Elsie, b1896 Leeds. In the 1911 census the family was living at 33 Seymour Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, and shown as Sam Swift 53 yrs a tailor, his wife Eliza 48 yrs and their children Samuel 24 yrs a house painter and Elsie 15 yrs no occupation listed. Also living with them is a boarder, Annie Greenwood single 23 yrs a lace jennier. His parents later lived at 31 Oxford Street, Rossington, Doncaster (CWGC). Samuel married Annie Greenwood on 3rd August 1912 at St Ann's Church, Nottingham. They had a son Leslie Samuel Swift born 5th February 1914. They lived at 14 Chaucer Terrace, Harlaxton Street, and then at 146 Allington Ave, Park Road, Lenton.
Private Samuel Swift, enlisted at Nottingham on 19th January 1915 and served with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France as a reinforcement to his battalion on 4th May 1915. He was killed in action on 19th October 1916. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
