Leslie was born in 1900 in Nottingham and was the only son of Sam a grocers assistant and Lucy Hannah Hardstaff nee Fidler. they lived at 30 Conway Street, Nottingham. His father Sam was born in 1864 in West Leake, Nottinghamshire and his mother Lucy Hannah Fidler was born in 1865 in New Basford, they were married in 1887 in Nottingham and had a daughter Hilda b1889 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Conway Street, Nottingham and are shown as Sam 47 yrs a grocers assistant, he is living with his wife Lucy 46 yrs and their two children , Hilda 22 yrs a dressmaker and Leslie 11 yrs a scholar.
Pte. Leslie Hardstaff, enlisted in Nottingham (he was under age as he was born in 1900 ) and initially served with service number M/337634 in the Army Service Corps he later transferred to the 1/18th (London Irish) Battalion London Regiment, was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 aged 19yrs .He has no known grave, his name is the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
In memoriam published 22nd August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HARDSTAFF. – In affectionate memory of Rfm. Leslie Hardstaff, killed in action August 22nd, 1918, dearly loved and only son of Mr. [Sam] and Mrs. Hardstaff, Conway-St. “HARDSTAFF. – In ever loving memory my dear brother, Leslie Hardstaff, killed in action near Albert August 22nd, 1918. – Hilda. “HARDSTAFF. – In loving memory of Leslie Hardstaff, killed in France August 22nd, 1918. A good and faithful comrade. – Sadly missed by his chum George. “HARDSTAFF. – In loving remembrance of Leslie Hardstaff, killed in France August 22nd, 1918.
