Family History

John Nowell was born in 1890 at Radcliffe on Trent and was the only son of Gorge a joiner and Sarah Ann Nowell, née Tyman of Holme Rd., Radcliffe-on-Trent, Notts. His father George was born in 1869 at Radcliffe on Trent and his mother Sarah Ann Tyman was born in 1867 at Orston, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District, they had a further child a daughter Lillian born 1893 at Radclffe on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Green, Radcliffe on Trent and are shown as George Nowell 42 yrs a joiner, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 44 yrs and their daughter Lillian 18 yrs an overall maker. In the 1911 census we find that John has left the family home, we find him living at Ragale Hall, Leicestershire, he is living with Albert Cantrell Hubbersley 67yrs and family and is shown as being 19yrs single and a domestic groom.

Military History

Sergeant John Nowell enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Radcliffe on Trent and first served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and entered theatre of war - France, 26/2/17. Prior to that the 2/7th had been in Ireland. He probably moved to 9th battalion in early 1918 when the army re-organisation was taking place. The battalion had much success during the last 100 days of the war and 4 November 1918 would be their last battle. It also proved to be a costly one with over 50 men killed and many wounded. The battalion inflicted a large number of casualties on the enemy, capturing 30 men and also 10 machine guns. John was one of those to die and he is buried in the small battlefield cemetery overlooking Sebourg. Thirty five of the fifty six graves In the Sebourg British Cemetery are 9th battalion men. Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 28th November 1918 : - NOWELL. - Killed in action, November 4th, 1918, Sergt. John (Jack) Nowell, Sherwoods (late 7th Sherwoods Transport), of Radcliffe-on-Trent, after four years' service.
