Fred Brothwell was born in 1895 in Nottingham and was the son of William a letterpress printer and Alice Mary Brothwell, née Dexter 6 Mornington Street, Woodborough Road, Nottingham. His father was born in 1862 in Newark and his mother Alice Mary Dexter was born in 1867 in Nottingham, they were married in 1891 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, they were William Dexter b1892, Harold b1894, Fred b1895 and Claude b1897. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Mornington Street, Nottingham and are shown as William 49 yrs a letter press printer, he is living with hois wife Alice 44 yrs and their children William 18 yrs a warehouse assistant, Harold 17 yrs a compositor, Fred 16 yrs working in an insurance office and Claude 14 yrs working in a lace warehouse.
Lance Corporal Fred Brothwell enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th battalion, Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 12th August 1914. He was reported missing on 21 March 1918, however, he had been taken prisoner but died of wounds on 18 May 1918 ; his death was not confirmed until January 1919. He is buried in Braine-le-Comte Communal Cemetery (grave ref. I.B.3.).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 21 January 1919: 'Brothwell. Missing March 21st 1918 now reported died of wounds in Germany May 18th. Lance Corporal Fred Brothwell Sherwood Foresters, son of W & A Brothwell, 6 Mornington Street, age 23. Father, mother, brothers.' In memoriam published 17th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- BROTHWELL. – In loving memory of L.-Cpl. Fred Brothwell, 1/7th Sherwoods, who died a wounded prisoner-of-war in Germany, May 18th, 1918, son of W. and A. Brothwell, 6, Mornington-street. Ever in our thoughts. – Father, mother, Harold, Claude.” Above notice is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918 CWGC: 'The village of Braine-le-Comte is located north-east of the town of Soignies. The cemetery contains the graves of 33 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War, all of whom died as prisoners of war.' His brother Private William Dexter Brothwell enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was attached to 178 Trench Mortar Battery and died of wounds 29th September 1917, aged 25. he is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3, Belgium. Plot 1. Row J. Grave 16.
