Ronald William McHaffie Hilley was born in 1886 in Campbelltown, Scotland and was the son of John Williams Hilley and Emma Gertrude Hamilton Hilley née McHaffie. His father John Williams Hilley was born in 1856 in Campletown, Scotland and his mother Emma Gertrude Hamilton McHaffie was born in Chorlton Lancashire they were married in 1882 in Birkenhead, Lancashire, his father died in Nottingham in 1906 and his mother died in 1895 also in Nottingham. He married his wife Martha Winterbottom in 1910 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District.

Military History

Gunner Ronald Hilley enlisted in Nottingham, he served with 'C' battery Royal Field Artillery, 162nd Brigade . He landed in France on 19th August 1914 and was killed in action on 13th October 1917 . He is buried in Larchwood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery (grave ref V.A.27).
