Arthur Cornelius Morley

Arthur was born in Nottingham in 1899, the son of Isaac Horace Morley and Miriam Morley née Creasey. Horace was born in Skellington, Lincolnshire, in 1854 (birth registered O/N/D Grantham), and his wife Miriam was also born in Lincolnshire (possibly Sleaford) in about 1857. They were married in 1880 (marriage registered J/A/S Sleaford). According to the information they provided on the 1911 Census they had been married for 30 years and had had eight children of whom seven survived. Seven children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911; Cecil James b. 1891, Winifred Alice b. 27 October 1886, Frederick Horace b. 15 May 1888, Florence Miriam b. 1889, Lewis George b. 5 December 1891 (registered J/F/M 1892), Hilda Louisa b. 13 August 1894 and Arthur Cornelius b. 1899. In 1891 Isaac (36), a school teacher and science teacher, and Miriam (34) were living at 39 Maple Street, Radford, Nottingham. They had four children, Cecil (9), Winifred (4), Frederick (2) and Florence (1). Also in the household was Ruth Creasey (20), a dress maker, who was Miriam's niece, and Ada Stapleton (15), a general servant. By 1901 the family had moved to 219 Woodborough Road, Nottingham, and Isaac was now a head teacher at a board school. The eldest son, Cecil (19), a chemist's shop assistant, had left home and was living in the household of Mrs Ada Stanaway at 403 Stafford Road, Yardley, Worcestershire, but their other children were still living at home; Winifred (14), Frederick (12) and Florence (11), and three children who had been born since the previous census, Lewis (9), Hilda (6) and Arthur (2). Also in the household was a domestic servant, Ada Mary Meads (16, b. Skellington, Lincolnshire). Isaac and Miriam were living at the same address in 1911; Isaac was still a head teacher employed by the City Council. Only five children were at home on the night of the census; Winifred (24), Florence (21) an unemployed dispenser (medical), Lewis (19), a chemist's apprentice, and Hilda (16) and Arthur (12) who were both still at school. Cecil (29) had married Martha Annie Flower in 1904 (registered J/A/S Christchurch) and was living with Martha (29) and their two daughters, Annie Dorothy (5) and Alice Dorothy (1), at 20 Abbott Road, Folkstone, Kent. Cecil was now a chemist's manager. Isaac and Miriam later lived at 'Purley', Dagmar Grove, Alexandra Park, Nottingham (CWGC). Isaac died on 20 July 1927 at the age of 72; he and his wife were living at 19 Hampstead Road, Mapperley. Miriam died four years later on 30 November 1931 aged 74; her address was 18 Hampstead Road, Mapperley. Of Arthur's siblings: Cecil James died on 21 May 1964 at St Mary's Hospital, Lyminge, Kent; he was 82 years old. Probate was awarded to Lewis Thomas William Morley, a civil servant, and his married daughter, Annie Dorothy Newman (Estate £3445). Winifred Alice married William Henson on 12 May 1913 and were living at 24 Bramcote Road, Beeston, Nottingham, when William attested on 2 December 1915 at the age of 30y. 9m. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 2 December and was not mobilized until 19 May 1916, going to France on 23 October 1916. William was a clerk with the Midland Railway and in France served with the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers (181519/WR-287471 Sergeant) and was discharged in 1919 to his home address, 'Purley', Dagmar Grove, Nottingham. Winifred probably died in 1970 age 83 (registered March Ampthill Bedfordshire). Frederick Horace probably died on 18 January 1978 (Estate £13831); his address was 10 Gregory Avenue, Lenton. In 1931 when he was awarded Probate for his mother's estate with his brother, Cecil, he was a statistical clerk. Florence Miriam married Sydney Frank Blower in 1913 (registered J/A/S Nottingham) and died in Nottingham General Hospital on 24 July 1961 at the age of 71. She and her husband lived at Suffolk Lodge, Glebe Street, Beeston. Probate was awarded to her husband, Sydney, who was a company director (Estate £198 15s. 5d). Lewis John probably died on 2 November 1973 aged 82 (Estate £12554); his address was 6 Elms Vale Road, Dover. Hilda Louisa married Raymond Keeble in 1923 (registered J/A/S Nottingham) but in 1964 married Harry E Strange (A/M/J Basford). She died on 13 April 1981 (registered June Stoke on Trent) at the age of 86; her address was 61 Pennine Way, Broad Meadows, Biddulph, Stoke on Trent (Probate £20141).
