Charles Ernest Ellis was born on 23rd February 1890 at Chesterfield and was baptised on 16th March 1890 at St Mary's Church, Chesterfield and was the son of Alfred a stone mason and the late Anne Ellis née Page of 8 Lower Grove Road Chesterfield Derbyshire. His father Alfred was born in 1862 at Chesterfield and his mother Anne Page was born in 1865 also at Chesterfield, she died in 1908 at Chesterfield aged 43 yrs, they were married on 14th February 1887 at St Mary's church Chesterfield and went on to have 12 children, sadly five were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were William b1888, Alfred b1889, Charles Ernest b1890,John Arthur b1892, Maud b1894, Annie b1898, Annie b1898, Florence b1903 and May b1905, all were born in Chesterfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Lower Grove Road, Chesterfield and are shown as Alfred Ellis 49 yrs a widow a stone mason he is living with his children, Charles 21 yrs an engineers pattern maker, John Arthur 19 yrs an engine fitter, Maud 17 yrs at home keeping house, Annie 13 yrs a domestic servant, Florence 8 yrs a scholar, and May 6 yrs.
Private Charles Ernest Ellis enlisted at Newark on 8th September 1914, he gave his age as 24 yrs and 7 months, he was a pattern maker and his next of kin was his brother John Arthur Ellis of 8 Lower Grove Road, Chesterfield.. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He died of paratyphoid (enteric fever) at 05.45 hrs on 28th March 1916 at 6th stationary hospital at Le Harve. He is buried at St. Marie Cemetery Le Havre France grave reference Div 19.V.4
