Walter was born in 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Edward a green grocer and Emma Smith, of 15, Reform Terrace, St. Ann's Well Rd., Nottingham. Edward and Emma had 8 children , sadly however three died in infancy. In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Hartwell Street, Nottingham , as well as Edward and Emma there sons James, John , Thomas and Walter 15 years of age and sawyer of wood are also at the address.
Walter enlisted in Derby, he initially served with Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment with the service number 3/3571 and later transferred to the 8th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was wounded and eventually brought back to England and died on 4th April 1918 at Dover Military Hospital. His body was returned to his family and he is buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery where his name is commemorated on the Screen Wall.

Walter Smith 8th North Staffords, died of wounds, Dover Hospital, April 4th, 1918.
