Family History

Joseph Shrewsbury was born in 1887 and baptised on 8th February 1888 at Lenton Prior, Nottingham, he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and the late Martha Shrewsbury née Lees of Regent Street, Beeston. John was born in 1854 at Nottingham, Martha Lees was born in 1860, she died in 1891, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham. Joseph married Charlotte Ellen Gee on 23rd December 1916 at St Michaels Church, Radford, she brought a child to the marriage, Edith Ann Gee they lived at 2 Denison Street and later 25 Windmill Street, both Radford, Nottingham. Commencing 24th March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence.

Military History

Private Joseph Shrewsbury attested on 4th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 29 yrs and 7 months, he was a cotton doubler and resided at 33 Denison Street, Nottingham with his next of kin his wife Martha, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 18th September 1916 at the Derby depot and was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment).. Landing in France on 19th December 1917 his joined his battalion in the field on 30th December 1917. He was wounded a gun show wound to his back on 29th August 1918, he was returned to England and admitted to King George Hospital, London on 4th September 1918. He died of his wounds on 14th September 1918 and his body was returned to his next of kin and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery his name commemorated on the CWGC Screen Wall (03284).
