Family history

William Lawrence Savidge was born in 1898 at Derby he was the only child of Charles a builders labourer and Florence Savidge née Robinson of 113 Pym Street, St Ann's, Nottingham.

His father Charles was born in 1874 at Nottingham, his mother Florence Robinson was born in 1872 at Derby they were married in 1897 at Derby.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 113 Pym Street, Nottingham, CHarles 37 yrs a builders labourer is living with his wife Florence 37 yrs and their son William Lawrence 13 yrs a scholar, the family are living with Charles's widow mother Lizzie Svidge 74 yrs.

Military history

Private William Lawrence Savidge enlisted at Nottingham, He landed in France on 28 June 1915. Awarded 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was killed in the attack on Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and buried Foncquevillers Military Cemetery (grave ref I.L.37).

He shares a grave with Private PRS Coppock, Lincolnshire Regiment (1 July 1916) and a soldier believed to be Private WH Cope, RAMC (1 July 1916).

Part of the battalion's Lewis gun detachment.
