Member of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). In 1911 Herbert was an apprentice iron founder.

Family history

Herbert Murfet was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur a engineers pattern maker and Emily Murfet née Archer of 35 Alfred Street South, Nottingham.

His father Arthur was born in 1851 at Isleham, Cambridge, his mother Emily Archer was born in 1855 at Nottingham, they were married on 1st January 1873 at Soham, Camridgeshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents were living at 37 Alfred Street Arhtu 60 yrs is an engineers pattern maker, he is living with his wife Emily 56 yrs and their sons George 18 yrs a habadashers shop assistant and Herbert 16 yrs an iron founders apprentice.

Military history

Private Herbert Murfet enlisted at Nottinmgham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 18th March 1915 and was killed in action, 15th September 1916, aged 21, during the attack on the German positions at Guillemont, France, during the Battle of the Somme.

He was reported missing on 15 September but his death was not confirmed until August the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 17 August 1917: 'Private H Murfet (Sherwood Foresters), 35 Alfred Street South, Nottingham, missing September 15th [1916] now reported killed, age 21.'
