Alonzo Gent was born in 1899 at Sutton in Ashfield, Son of Mrs. Caroline Lee (formerly Gent), of Stuart St., Kirkby Rd., Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottingham (CWGC) and the late Joseph Gent a frame work knitter
His father Joseph was born in 1863 at Suttoon in Ashfield, he died in 1907 at Nottingham, he was 44 yrs old, his mother Caroline Gunn was born in 1869, they were married in 1886 in Nottingham they had 5 children.
At the time of the 1911 census the family was living at 43 Virginia Street, Sneinton. His mother was a widow 42 yrs and listed as the head of the household. In the house were Alonzo (12, scholar), Joseph (18), a married sister, Mabel Stanton (22), and Caroline's grandson, William Henry (8 months).
Private Alonzo Gent, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Nottingham, he served with the 1/1st South Notts. Hussars, he died on H.M.H.S. Valdivia at sea on 9th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Doiran memorial Greece. He served in Egypt from 12 September 1915. He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
In memoriam published 9th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“GENT. – In loving memory of my dear son, Trooper Alonzo Gent, Yeomanry, who died at sea, July 9th, 1916, aged 18. Called home in the morning of his days. – From his loving mother, brothers, and sisters, and his dear friend Lillie.”
