Family history

Lawrence Sims was born in 1897 at Borrowash, Derbyshire, he was the son of Stephen a nuseryman and Annie Sims née Green of Nottingham Road, Borrowash, Derbyshire.

His father Stephen was born in 1861 at Saltley, Birmingham, his mother Annie Green was born in 1862 at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, they were married on 26th June 1881 at St Peters Church, Derby, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Nottingham Road, Borrowash, Stephen 50 yrs is a nurseyman, he is living with his wife Annie 49 yrs and their children, Martha Ann 28 yrs assisting in her fathers business, Stephen 22 yrs assisting in his father business, Gertrude 21 ys a cotton doubler, Frank 19 yrs assisting in his fathers business, Alice 18 yrs a cotton doubler, Lawrence 14 yrs assisting in his fahers business, Robert 12 yrs a scholar and John 12 yrs a scholr. S,

Military history

Private Lawrence Sims attested on 6th December 1915 at Ilkeston, giving his address as Nottingham Road, Borrowash, he was 19 years and 7 months old, he was a market gardener. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 28th April 1916, He was posted to the North Staffordsire Regiment on 19th June 1916. Landing in France on 27th August 1916 he was killed in action on 19th November 1916. He is buried at Connaught Cemetery Thiepval Grave Reference: VII G 6
