Clarence Gordon Shaw was born in 1892 at Ilkeston, he was the son of Samuel a brick manufacturer and Lydia Emma Shw née Evans of Fern Hollow, Station Road, Ilkeston.
His father was born in 1863 at Ilkeston, his mother Lydia Emma Evans was born in 1865 in Staffordshire they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Ferns Hollow, Station Road, Ilkeston, Samuel 48 yrs is a retired brick manufacturer, he is living with his wife Lydia Emma 46 yrs and their children, Lydia Emma 26 yrs a school teacher, Mable 23 yrs a school teacher, Clarence Gordon 18 yrs a school teacher and Brian Duncan 13 yrs a scholar.
Clarence married his wife Dorothy Mellors Richards in 1915 at Nottingham
Lieutenant Clarence Gordon Shaw enlisted and served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
