Norman Edwin Rutherford was born in 1894 at Barrow in Furness, he was the son of Andrew a rate collector and Agnes Rutherford, née Eccleston of 11, Cheltenham St., Barrow-in-Furness.

His father Anrew was born in 1851 at Gaires, Cumberland, his mother Agnes Eccleston was born in 1856 at Dlaton in Furness, they were married in 1876 at Dalton in Furness they went on to have 12 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or ealey childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Cheltenham Street, Barrow in Furness, Andrw 60 yrs is a rate collectoer, he is living with his wife Agnes 55 yrs and their children, Ethel 32 yrs a shipyard typist, Nellie 27 yrs a shipyard telephone operator, Walter 25 yrs a shipyard commercial clerk, Gertude 22 yrs no occupation listed, Constance 21 yrs no occupation listed, Norman Edwin 17 yrs a scholar and Doris 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Second Lietenant Norman Edwin Rutherford enlisted and served with the 7th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he died of wounds on 21st July 1916, he is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt L'Abbe, France
